What is Theta Healing + Theta Healing Benefits – A look at this well known energy healing technique and the benefits. Plus, how it compares to and contrasts with Reiki healing.
This article begins with a definition of Theta Healing and how the technique fits into a philosophy.
For context, before more a detailed overview, I outline Reiki Healing and what happens in a Reiki session.
I include my own experience with each healing modality. This article closes with the benefits of Theta Healing.

In the beginning…
Though I discovered Theta Healing by accident, it felt very strongly like I had been guided.
I’d been working as a psychic clairvoyant and Reiki healer in London for five years.
One day, I felt this seemingly random pull to the newsagent section of Sainsbury’s supermarket.
…A pull to buy a mind, body & spirit magazine, to be precise.
I wasn’t sure why.
When I got home, a ‘Theta Healer’ article leapt out of the magazine’s pages. It turned out this particular healer worked in a clinic round the corner from me.
I booked a 1-2-1 session immediately.
I didn’t really understand why I needed to see her. It just felt like the right thing to do.
At the session, I was impressed and excited by the high level of insight the healer gave. The practical application of energy healing to ‘ZAP’ the problems she uncovered was a novel and new approach.
It was a like a psychic reading and healing session, rolled into one.
I left our sessions feeling energetically lighter. I’d also gained a smorgasbord of significant new insights into myself / my life. I felt fully seen, heard and understood, despite not doing much talking.
Training as a Theta Healing Practitioner was the natural next step.
Then, to train as a Theta Healing Teacher (– in Greece, taught by Theta Founder Vianna Stibal herself).
Discovering Theta Healing to becoming a teacher all happened within a year.

Theta Healing TM definition
The Theta Healing® Technique is a form of energy healing that anyone can learn.
Theta Healing can be used for self-healing, or done for you by a practitioner.
Theta Healing® process is done while the practitioner is in a meditative ‘Theta brain wave’ state.
Put very simply, Theta Healers access a heightened state of consciousness using meditation and psychic sensing.
While in this Theta state of consciousness, they ‘witness’ the healing done by the energy they are tapping in to, using their inner eye.
Don’t turn off.
Thetas Healing is a non-religious practice and there is no dogma.
It’s similar to other methods of energy healing taught by schools all over the world.
Like quantum physics theory and Reiki, Theta Healing theory works on the premise that everything is made up of energy, and that our human energy field can be changed and transformed.
To facilitate health in the body, mind and emotions, healer’s witness theta healing changing the vibration at atomic and subatomic levels, following the prayer / intention / command they have set.

Theta Healing Philosophy
Theta Healing philosophy teaches that there are Seven Planes of Existence. They are the seen and unseen forces that structure this universe and beyond.
Each Plane has its own vibration (speed at which atoms move), which creates a unique dimension.
This theory explains how all natural, physical and metaphysical existential phenomena fit together in one cohesive whole. It’s still the most comprehensive and cohesive non-religious theoretical system I’ve found.
It’s 7 interdependent dimensions fit the limit of interdependent elements shown working together throughout the natural world. (With a halfway house between the 3rd and 4th plane being where spirits can get stuck).
It can be difficult to wrap your head around the such an abstract, yet all encompassing, concept.
Nevertheless, bear in mind that no one really knows what happens inside an atom – not even scientists.
On the highest 7th plane is ‘Creator’ – also widely known as the God force, vital energy, prana, chi, Creator of All That Is, Yahweh, Father, Mother, the Goddess, or the Divine. This pure energy is the same force that all religions point to.
Healing energy is directed from the 7th Plane. The Theta Healer just has to command and then witness the healing, and make sure the process is completed.

Reiki Healing vs Theta Healing
Energy healing has evolved over thousands of years. To get some context, let’s compare one of the most widespread energy healing methods – Reiki – with Theta Healing.
Reiki healing was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. The healing practice spread to the USA via Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe in the 1980s. Today it is used in many UK hospitals and is gaining respectability in medical circles.
It consists of ‘hands on’ Reiki healing, i.e. in person / sometimes without touching (i.e. it’s COVID-proof). And distant Reiki healing, i.e. without the healer and ‘patient’ being geographically close.
Reiki also works on the premise that we are all made up of energy. Instead of invoking a ‘Creator’ or God force, as Theta Healing does, Reiki healing harnesses a neutral life giving ‘Universal Energy’.
This vital life force energy is used to improve health and well being on all levels.
After opening up the flow using a series of ancient symbols, the universal energy – Reiki – is ‘channelled’ through the chakras of the healer to the client. For distant healing, Reiki energy healing is sent to a person via the intention of the healer.
If you’re new to energy healing, this might sound incredulous. Yet it’s the same reason I can give an accurate psychic reading to someone on the other side of the world. Energy travels – fast!
What happens in a Reiki Healing session
In a Reiki healing session, energy goes where is most needed. It can be directed onto different levels of the aura or to specific parts of the body, or to help with medical issues.
For example, if a person is tired most of the directed energy may go to the adrenals, or to bring ungrounded energy back into the body.
The healer trusts the flow of the energy is for the highest good and lets the Reiki healing do it’s work.
There can be positive side effects. For example, one woman I was working on for depression and anger issues, suddenly got her sex drive back – and a new girlfriend!
As with most complementary healing techniques, energy healers cannot diagnose or claim to cure. They can only facilitate healing by creating the right energetic environment in the body.
Different healers will sense the Reiki healing in different ways via their psychic senses. For example, empaths may feel an emotion being released or a heaviness lifting. Clairvoyants may see images relating to the past, or the healing process of the client. Medical intuitives may see a part of the body being healed or an element of disease in close up. Other intuitives may get a sense of deep ‘knowing’ what the problem is, or what could help the client’s recovery.
Some healers will be more neutral in their feedback; this does not mean that their channeling ability is less strong or that the Reiki healing was less effective.
Reiki healing for trauma
If have found Reiki healing to be exceptional in calming the brain’s fight or flight response, and engendering a physiological sense of safety.
For that reason, I would recommend Reiki healing to people who are in recovery from trauma, or who have CPTSD.
Ideally, a person would combine Reiki Healing with other body based therapies like yoga, or a daily meditation practice with writing exercises.

Reiki Healing: My Distant Healing Experience
During my disturbing episode of tinnitus in 2014, I was told at a medical consultation that I’d “never hear silence again“.
The incessant high pitched ringing in my brain terrorised me. I couldn’t stop catastrophising about the acoustic prison I might have to live in for the rest of my life in.
As a desperate last resort to get some peace over Christmas, I requested distant Healing from several international Reiki healing organisations.
Once on their lists, I was still pessimistic and couldn’t imagine how I would ever feel better.
What happened next?
A few days later, I was sat on my living room sofa with a cup of herb tea.
Gradually it hit me. Like a wave of peace.
And calm.
And a feeling of well being.
Everything became …soft and safe.
I felt myself relax and surrender to the situation for the first time in days.
Miraculously, the tinnitus backed off for a few hours too.
For me, that was the most concrete example of Reiki distant healing’s effectiveness.
Yet, it is anecdotal. And, yes, there could have been a placebo effect.
However, I had been trying to invoke a peaceful state of mind and failing miserably, for days.
This shift felt involuntary and otherworldly, especially as I’d already given up on anything being able to help me.

Theta Healing vs Reiki Healing
Theta Healing founder Vianna Stibal teaches that physical, psychological and spiritual issues can be healed in a more directional way.
Like Reiki healing, Theta Healing channels energy from Source. But unlike Reiki healing, Theta Healing is done using a series of commands (intentions or prayers) to a ‘Creator’. There is also a reliance on the healer being able to ‘witness’ the healing with their inner eye for it to be effective, i.e. instead of ‘feeling’ it or knowing it intuitively.
When Theta Healing has not finished healing a particular issue, the client feels heavy or uncomfortable.
In these instances, the Theta Healer must do more work to release beliefs associated with a particular pain, illness or trauma.
Beliefs can be pulled from four levels of being:
- Core level – stored at frontal lobe of brain
- Genetic level – stored in the Pineal Gland (known as the ‘Master Cell)
- History level – stored at the back of the head an shoulder (healing expands outward + inward via the aura)
- Soul level – stored at the heart chakra
At source, the Theta Healer sets the intention that all beliefs (also known as ‘programmes’) are replaced with ‘the highest and best beliefs‘, or the ‘correct beliefs according to Creator‘.
What can happen in a Theta Healing session
If beliefs won’t go in, it usually means that the healer needs to download into the client what it feels like to have those beliefs. For example, the human cell has a hard time accepting a new belief like “I am safe” if the person has never experienced in their body what it feels like to be safe.
** For more on the new science of how our beliefs and feelings affect us at a cellular level see Bruce Lipton’s Biology of Belief, or Candace Pert’s Molecules of Emotion.
Once the feelings associated with a particular belief have been downloaded, it is easier for the the belief itself to be downloaded into the for levels, and for negative beliefs to be replaced.
When beliefs resist being replaced, the healer and client do ‘digging work’ until they find out why. Sometimes the client can be unconsciously holding onto negative beliefs because there is a secondary gain.
For example, if the belief “I am sick” will not be replaced, then there may be a secondary gain for the client in being sick, such as receiving more attention or care from loved ones.
If the healer can uncover the positive benefit of a negative belief, they can then do feelings and belief work until the consciousness of the client feels safe to let the negative belief go.

Common Issues in Theta Healing
Theta Healing training covers an extensive range of topics, yet it often simplifies the healing process compared to other healing modalities. For example, removing ‘attachments’ (i.e. spirits who have not passed over) is a relatively straightforward and fast process when compared to Wicca or Shamanism.
Other issues that can be revealed during a Theta Healing session include:
Soul Fragments – the deep energetic exchange between two people (for example lovers or family members, or even enemies) can leave fragments of each person’s core being behind in the other person.
Broken Soul – When someone has suffered a lot, in this lifetime or others, they can feel profound despondency and grief that can be hard to shift. Healing the ‘broken soul’ helps repair a damaged or broken spirit.
Oaths and vows – Sometimes we enter into contracts and agreements with another person or people, consciously or unconsciously. Vows are special kinds of oaths; sacred promises that can bind us lifetime to lifetime. The most common one is marriage, but other vows and oaths include: celibacy / chastity, poverty, servitude, slavery, silence, loyalty, solitude and taking on a curse.

Theta Healing: My Distant Healing Experience
The most tangible experience I have had with Theta Healing was shortly after I’d moved to Spain, in 2016.
Totally drained of energy, listless and bed bound for several months, I was burnt out.
I was also feeling anxious because so many parts of my new life were out of my control. This was causing mood swings.
As well as nutritional healing, I had a number of sessions of Theta Healing to help the recovery process and anxiety reduction.
What happened next?
The day after my distant Theta Healing session, it literally felt like my cells were ‘singing‘. This is the only way I can describe the physical sensation of complete well-being in my body.
Rather than feeling fatigued and empty, my ‘cells’ seemed full of energy (– I know, I know, it’s such a vague term, but honestly this is the most accurate description I can think of to describe how my body felt).
The core of my being seemed to be ‘singing in harmony’ and my body felt very happy! Mentally, I also felt truly at peace for the first time in months.
Yet, this example is anecdotal. And, yes, there could have been a placebo effect.
However, the change in the physical experience of my body – i.e. how my body felt moment to moment – was dramatic. I could find no other reason for such a change to occur from one day to the next.

Theta Healing Benefits
From my experience of giving and receiving Theta healing on many occasions since training in 2015, I have found Theta Healing to have many benefits. These include:
- The interactivity of Theta Healing can be joyous and humorous, even when dealing with heavy issues.
- The specificity of Theta Healing can allow the client to feel deeply seen, heard and understood.
- The insights gained from Theta Healing can open up new doors of self-awareness, compassion and understanding. It can also enhance self esteem.
- Working with a Theta Healer over the long term can allow the client to build deep trust and intimacy with another human being.
- The ‘inner seeing’ aspect of Theta Healing can get quickly into unconscious blind spots, while evading normal psychological defences of the ego. This means it can be faster reach and address core issues.
- Theta Healing can help validate a person’s experience and articulate what a person is feeling on a deeper level. Even when they may not be able to verbalise such complex or unusual emotions themselves.
Further benefits:
- Additionally, the inner seeing aspect of Theta Healing means that it is not necessary for the client to disclose all the details of any issues causing emotional or psychological pain. A Theta Healer is usually able to get to the heart of the matter without a long verbal explanation and retelling of details from the person seeking help. This means there is a reduction in the shame or psychological discomfort experienced by a client during the healing process, and the client does not have to ‘relive’ trauma by recounting it.
- The spiritual element – this sense of being guided – can be restore a person’s faith in a higher power and a benevolent universe. Experiencing such tangible help from unseen realms can be very comforting to people who have felt alone, isolated or unsupported with their problems, or those in recovery from dogmatic / abusive religious experiences.
Added to that, Theta Healers trust that any issues that need healing are revealed in the course of the healing session. The healing process is like peeling an onion: different layers of being are addressed over time.
It is not a Theta healer’s responsibility to prescribe or dictate the direction of the healing session, only to facilitate the healing via a process of intention and witnessing. The client will often have their own ideas about what they want to address, so the sessions remain client led.
