I used to believe that self love was looking after my feet or doing self care.
Now I realise self love is more about filling in developmental gaps caused by my formative years.
It’s about being a supportive adult.
Someone who stewards the younger part of myself when she’s confused or upset.
If you’ve ever compounded your own pain with an attitude of self-judgement or loathing…
…Or berated yourself internally for not living up to your own expectations…
…Or blamed an aspect of your self for unsettling feelings…
…Or believed you are somehow ‘faulty’ or lacking…
It’s in these moments, your self love is tested.
Our inner children need love, acceptance, understanding + kindness.
Ignore an inner child’s pain: he / she will take over your life.
Tend to an inner child’s pain: healing happens.
Slowly, I’ve learnt to accept my inner child’s feelings and not push her away.
This is one thing that helps.
