At the time I manifested a yellow camper van
I escaped London’s inner city, ‘the big smoke’.
Between university and first job, I scraped together enough pennies for a road trip around the south west of the UK.

My plan was to visit Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill + Stone Henge in Wiltshire, UK.
Megalithic stone circles and burial sites of awe and wonder.
They still have a strong mystical pull, especially for pagans at the Equinoxes.

I remember driving my big old van around Wiltshire and getting lost on a vast military shooting range.
The army’s signs told me I risked getting shot or ran over by a tank!
I slept by the ancient church yard, next to Avebury’s magical stone circle and walked at Silbury Hill.

The most memorable occurrences happened after I parked in Stonehenge’s car park at dusk.
Stonehenge’s significance as a place of ancestor worship + healing has been dated back to 7000BC.
Researchers believe that that the huge stones were brought from west Wales in 2300BC.

This superhuman effort was due to their belief in healing.
They believed a healing power belonged to the huge dolerite stones and the location.

As I stretched my legs, a security guard came over to see what I was doing.
The guard – I’ll call him ‘Bob’ – told me that Stonehenge was now closed for visitors.
Fortunately, he gave me permission to sleep in my van overnight.
“Thank goodness for that!” I thought.

He welcomed me to join other guards in their Portacabin for a cup of tea.
They were curious about palmistry and I read many outstretched hands to break the ice.
Their paternal interest + the light-hearted atmosphere made me feel very safe.

I finished my tea + went back to the van to sleep.
The car park was empty and darkness fell as millions of stars appeared in the velvety sky.
The place was far from the grime + noise of my urban life now.

There was a tap on the van window – it was Bob.
As a ‘thanks’ for the palm readings, the guards had agreed + wanted to know:
“Would you like to walk inside the stone circle at night?”
Of course, I said yes!

I vividly remember standing, aged 23, in the middle of Stonehenge.
All alone, looking up at millions of glittering stars.
Outside the stone circle, I had my very own security guard watching over me!
It was an out-of-this-world experience.
For the first time in my life, I felt truly blessed + guided.

Yet, that was not the end of the story…
Early next day, I got ready to leave.
Again, I heard a crunch crunch of footsteps crossing the gravel car park.
This time it was a different guard walking slowly over.
His face looked grim.
I sat in the van door, as this somber man slowly began to tell me about a deeply buried secret.

He was an ex-SAS officer.
He’d done “terrible things” (his words) in the line of duty, during the first Gulf War in 1990.
Deeply troubled, he stuttered and stammered.
Without receiving any psychological treatment or care, it was hard for him to verbalise what he’d done, or how he felt.

I listened quietly as he explained how his military past was affecting his marriage.
He’d withdrawn in shame from his wife.
Their relationship + family was breaking down.

He feared he was losing her, but could not bring himself to open up.
He was even more scared that she would reject him if she knew what he’d done at war.
I listened quietly + intently, and said very little.

As his worries were spoken out loud, the big man’s demeanour began to change.
It seemed that sharing his story – without being judged, criticised or advised – brought palpable relief.
Being fully seen and heard made him feel like a recovery might be possible.
When he said good bye, he sounded hopeful.
Perhaps now he could find the courage to be honest with his wife too?

This is probably the earliest memory I have of the power of healing.
The simple act of listening and asking questions, without rushing to rescue or advise.
25 years later, I look back on this story through the lens of being a professional healer.

I can recognise the debilitating effect of shame and PTSD on a traumatised person.
…As well as this ex-soldier’s bravery to open up to a stranger.
This simple story illustrates how simply being present with someone else’s pain + shame helps them heal + begin to find hope.

This potential for healing is available to every human being.
