A humble lemon is my favourite ‘anti-virus go-to’ during the winter months. The healing properties of lemon and immune health benefits have been proven by science.
Did you know that, on top of keeping your immune system tip-top and helping prevent cancer, this super food can also help with the housework?
Healing Properties of Lemon
One of the strongest healing properties of lemon is Vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts the immune system, and has other health benefits. The immune health benefits of lemon help you to fight off viruses, and also bounce back from infections.
Vitamin C deficiency results in impaired immunity as well as a higher susceptibility to infections. The Vitamin C you get from lemon can both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections.
Immune Health Benefits of Lemon
If I feel a virus-like tickle in my throat or the sniffles coming on, I up my intake of warm lemon water – even gargling with it. Without my voice I cannot work, and when I was younger I had a history of severe coughs and colds, the relentless ‘coughing’ phase often lasting for many weeks after the initial infection.
These simple, early preventative measures usually mean I manage to fight off the invader, before the virus can take hold. If in doubt, I throw in clove of raw garlic and a light tea tree oil inhalation to clear the airways too.
Drinking lemon water has been shown to help keep your gut healthy, because of it’s antimicrobial effects and the extra hydration, and prevent aging.
Lemon healing properties are clearly demonstrated, but if you drink lemon water, be careful to protect your teeth. I always wash my mouth out with clear water after drinking lemon water.
Despite the immune health benefits of lemon, the high acidity of lemon juice is very bad for the enamel of your teeth.
That high acidity can have other benefits that are not related to healing properties or immune health benefits of lemons.
Cleansing Benefits of Lemons
If you are a highly sensitive person, and you want to reduce the number of harmful chemicals you are using in your home, you can use the lemon husk / rind to cleanse grease from your kitchen and and limescale from bathroom!
I use lemon rind or juice on my taps, sinks, shower screens, water jug, etc it’s miraculous how quickly the limescale disappears. White vinegar is another powerful natural cleanser you can use to keep your house clean. Mix lemon juice with bicarbonate of soda and the burnt-in grease of over trays and the gas hob miraculously wipes away. It’s surprisingly powerful!
Healing Properties of Lemon as a Superfood
Other ways you can add the healing properties of lemon and lemon health benefits to your diet is by popping slices into a curry – surprisingly tasty – or adding to a salad dressing.
Here’s my Lemon Salad Dressing Recipe.
I’ve been using this Catalunyan salad dressing recipe for about 10 years. It’s tart and it’s got a kick, because of the lemon, vinegar and raw garlic, but I like it like that!
Catalunya Salad Dressing:
- 1 clove garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- Juice from 1/2 to 1 lemon
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar
Chop the garlic into tiny pieces and put in a small bowl. Add the sugar, salt and lemon juice. Mix well. Add the olive oil and vinegar and adjust sweetness to taste.
